Keri Gans, M.S., R.D.N., author of The Small Change Diet, says White Claw 70 has 30 fewer calories and 1.3% less alcohol than the original 100-calorie White Claw hard seltzer.

When you take a closer look at the ingredients of the 70-calorie clementine seltzer and the 100-calorie tangerine seltzer, they almost look identical, “except the 100-calorie version contains cane sugar and tangerine juice concentrate,” explains Amy Gorin, M.S., R.D.N., owner of Amy Gorin Nutrition in New York. “Even so, the 12-ounce tangerine beverage has just 2 grams of added sugar, which contributes only a small amount to the daily recommended limit on added sugar (10% of total calories, or 53 grams for a 2,000-calorie diet).”

Note: The company doesn’t list they type of alcohol they use in their seltzers, which Gorin says would be helpful for consumers to know.

So, is White Claw Hard Seltzer healthy?

It’s good news for hard seltzer lovers, Gorin says White Claw 70 is a great drink if you’re looking for something alcoholic. “The product is low in calories, and added sugars are minimal.”. Cocktails can contain hundreds of calories and lots of sugar, so this is a much better option than a frozen margarita,” she adds.

You should still drink them in moderation, though. According to the U.S. Dietary Guidelines, women should not drink more than one drink a day, and men should not drink more than two. A drink is defined as a 12-ounce beer, a 5-ounce glass of wine, or 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits, says Gans.

Despite this, Gorin says, you should be able to stay within these guidelines, even if you choose to drink the more alcoholic version. “White Claw beverages contain 5% alcohol by volume, which means 0.6 ounces of alcohol per 12-ounce drink,” Gorin explains. Even if you had two of the 100-calorie drinks in one evening, you’d be consuming 1.2 ounces of alcohol, four grams of sugar, and 200 calories.
